Entrepreneurship – The Last Refuge.

By DC / Posted on 27 October 2011

Came across an absolutely fantastic quote during the week which really struck a cord… “Entrepreneurship is the last refuge of the trouble making individual”. -Natalie Clifford Barney. (You can read more about her troublemaking days here)

Sometimes it really does feel that way to me. I’ve been fortunate to work with companies and start-ups in many countries and for those wondering believe me when I say, that in my opinion Ireland is the single hardest country in the world to start a business from an ideological perspective. Antarctica would be easier! I hear penguins are quite open to new ideas!

And its not because of our banks, or our ridiculous government support systems and their bureaucratic red tape. No, its far more basic that that!

Its very simple. Irish people hate change and business these days is all about change. Ireland is a country with no shortage of ideas but there seems to be an inherent resistance to any attempt to do things differently. So many Irish entrepreneurs come up with exciting ways to transform long outdated business models but somehow the large majority of Irish people would still prefer to do it the old way. Time to change!

So over today’s coffee break why not take a real look at your business and work out what parts of it are being held back by the fact that you’re holding yourself back because of expectations.

Do you have something to say?
